<subfield code="a">The Corruption Perception Index published by Transparency International scores and ranks countries/territories based on how corrupt a country’s public sector is perceived to be. It is a combination of surveys and assessments of public sector corruption in 176 countries. Denmark and New Zealand were ranked the best while for the tenth year running, Somalia was ranked the worst performer on the index, with South Sudan in second from bottom. The index revealed that no country is free from corruption and countries at the bottom of the index are characterised by widespread impunity for corruption, poor governance and weak institutions. It states that elections across the African continent provided a good reflection of corruption trends in the region in 2016.</subfield>
