This paper is a preliminary assessment of illicit financial flows related to the production and trade of gold produced at artisanal and small-scale mines. It describes upstream and downstream flows in the Great Lakes Region of Africa, and suggests elements of a toolkit to enable greater understanding of gold-related illicit financial flows.
